Waqra Pukara

Waqrapukara (two Quechua words, waqra horn and pukara fortress, which means fortress in the shape of a horn) is an archaeological site located in the district of Acos and in the province of Acomayo. It is located near the Apurímac River at 4 300 masl or 14,107 feet. It was built by the Qinchas and then conquered by the Incas. It was declared in July of 2017 as Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture. The historical site would have been an Inca sanctuary. The Inca Site is located on platforms, squares and a stone forest.

Day 1: Waqra Pukara
We pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 am and then we head south of Cusco to Chuquicahuana, small town that belongs to the Acomayo province. We take a different route to appreciate the Pomacanchi district and lagoon where we will have a short stop. We continue with the route to reach Sangarara district to have breakfast. Then we continue to the Rinconada community where we start the trek to Waqrapukara. On this hike, we see a lot of flowers and wildlife typical to the area. We will also see amazing rock formations and spectacular landscapes that make this hike an unforgettable one! In Waqrapukara we will have a guided tour visiting the following places: Intipunku (Sun Gate), Wiracocha enclosure, rock paintings and more! After the visit to Waqrapukara we will begin our return to Sangarara where we will have a lunch. Then we will start our drive back to Cusco.
